Fire prevention, not fire fighting

The smartest operators don't wait for the bridge to catch fire before they cross it. A fire-prevention mindset — dealing with issues before they cause havoc — is the difference between a quiet life and a Public Inquiry.

By André Renner, Transport Consultant

The authorities like to keep us on our toes — but we should always remember why. It's to keep us safe. Sometimes the rules feel irrelevant or burdensome, and whether we love them or hate them, we either adhere to them or walk away. For most operators, walking away isn't a real option. So what we can all do instead is be prepared.

What if the bridge is already on fire?

A constant frustration of mine is seeing operators all around me who need help but don't know it. I've lost count of the conversations with a driver where it becomes clear they need help, and quickly. One roadside pull, one misdemeanour, and you can bet they'll get an investigation. Some people, sadly, can't be helped until it's too late.

The "cross that bridge" trap

I've worked with people whose favourite saying is "we'll cross that bridge when we come to it." My attitude has always been the opposite: fire prevention, not fire fighting. Deal with issues before they arise and cause havoc — because once they do, they're far costlier and more disruptive to put right.

Why prevention beats firefighting

  • Problems caught early are cheaper and quicker to fix
  • A clean compliance record protects your repute at a Public Inquiry
  • Proactive operators avoid the stress of reacting to enforcement
  • Drivers and the public are safer when defects never reach the road

Changes on the horizon: TPMS, tyres and trailers

A timely example: the rules around Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS), tyres — including front running tyres on trucks and trailers versus steering axles — and trailers more broadly are changing. The questions for every operator are simple: Are you aware? Are you prepared?

Tyres are one of the most common causes of roadside prohibitions, so staying ahead of regulatory change here is exactly the kind of preventative work that keeps you off the regulator's radar. Build it into your maintenance regime and your driver walkaround checks now, rather than scrambling when enforcement catches up.

What being prepared looks like

Preparation isn't complicated, but it has to be consistent. Robust driver walkaround checks, a defect reporting and rectification trail you can actually produce, planned maintenance that's never allowed to slip, and a habit of acting on small warning signs before they grow. That's the difference between an operator who walks into a Public Inquiry with confidence and one who walks in hoping for the best.

The point: be a good boy scout — be prepared. The cost of prevention is always less than the cost of the fire.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What does 'fire prevention, not fire fighting' mean for operators?+
It means dealing with compliance issues before they escalate, rather than reacting once enforcement action or an investigation is already under way. Prevention is cheaper, less stressful and far safer than firefighting a crisis.
Why are tyre and TPMS rules a concern?+
Tyres are among the most common causes of roadside prohibitions, and the rules around Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems, tyres and trailers are changing. Operators who prepare in advance avoid being caught out by enforcement.
How can I be better prepared as an operator?+
Maintain robust driver walkaround checks, keep a clear defect reporting and rectification trail, never let planned maintenance slip, and act on small warning signs early. An independent audit can highlight the gaps before the regulator does.
