OCRS What-If: predict your DVSA risk score

The Operator Compliance Risk Score (OCRS) decides which vehicles the DVSA stops. Simulate future events to see how many clean checks you need to get back to Green.

The Operator Compliance Risk Score (OCRS) is the DVSA’s risk-rating system for HGV and PSV operators. It scores your roadworthiness (maintenance) and traffic (drivers’ hours and traffic offences) records separately, using weighted points from roadside encounters and inspections over a rolling three-year period — recent events count most. The lower your score, the better: operators are banded Green (low risk), Amber, Red (high risk — far more likely to be stopped) or Grey (too little data). The calculator below lets you model how future clean checks, fails or prohibitions would move your band, and roughly how many clean encounters it takes to recover to Green.

Indicative guidance only. The DVSA OCRS algorithm weights points by the age of each encounter over three years; this tool models the direction of travel so you can plan. For a full assessment, talk to our compliance team.

How to use this tool

  1. Baseline: enter the weighted points and encounters from your latest DVSA report for both Maintenance and Traffic.
  2. Predict: use the sliders to add future clean checks or new fails/prohibitions.
  3. Time decay: select the age of your points to see the 75% or 50% reduction.
  4. Plan: review the projected band and bespoke action plan.

Why OCRS matters

A "Red" OCRS makes your vehicles a priority target at the roadside. Staying Green reduces stops, delays and the risk of escalation to a Public Inquiry. If your score is drifting, a compliance audit is the fastest way to find and fix the root causes.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is the Operator Compliance Risk Score (OCRS)?+
The OCRS is the DVSA’s risk-rating system for commercial vehicle operators. It uses weighted points from roadside checks and inspections over a rolling three-year period to score your maintenance (roadworthiness) and traffic compliance, helping the DVSA decide which operators and vehicles to target for enforcement.
What do the OCRS bands (Green, Amber, Red, Grey) mean?+
Green means low risk and the fewest stops; Amber is moderate risk; Red is high risk, making your vehicles a priority target at the roadside; and Grey means there is too little data to score you yet. The goal is to reach and stay Green.
How is the OCRS calculated?+
Each encounter adds weighted points — for example, a minor infringement scores fewer points than a serious infringement, prohibition or “S” marked defect — and points are weighted by age, so the last 12 months count most. Your score is broadly the weighted points divided by the number of encounters, then mapped to a band.
How many clean checks does it take to move from Red to Green?+
There is no fixed number — it depends on how many points you carry and how many encounters you have. Adding clean checks increases your encounter count and dilutes your weighted points over time, while older points decay. Use the calculator above to model your own recovery path.
